PS Vita pre-orders sell out in homeland ahead of release date

While the Nintendo 3DS has been grabbing all the headliners recently regarding portable gaming, the upcoming new offering from Sony is a highly anticipated device for many gamers. It is now being reported that the PS Vita pre-orders sell out in the devices homeland ahead of the consoles release date.

The company has said all of the pre-orders in the country are now gone, and Andrew House of Sony Computer Entertainment said “there were lines to make reservations for the machine at retailers”. Bloomberg are reporting that despite this Sony didn’t reveal how many units had actually been ordered so far.

Sony’s new portable gaming console is launched this coming Friday and is the replacement for the PSP that was first introduced in 2004. Advanced orders for the device began on October 15th for the device that features a 5-inch OLED display.

The company is looking to sales of its games to boost earnings after losing money for eight years in a row from its TV arm. In the summer Sony slashed the price of the PS3 to boost sales and increase earnings. Both Sony and Nintendo have seen increased competition in mobile gaming from the likes of Apple and smartphone gaming.

In Japan the Vita starts at 24,980 yen, which is around $320 for the basic Wi-Fi only model, while consumers in other parts of the world including the US will get the Vita in February starting at $249. The PS Vita will cost more than the Nintendo 3DS since it received a price cut in the summer, and Sony have already said they won’t be entering a price war.

Will you be getting the PS Vita once it is released?
