Last week we told you about the very impressive incentive that Sony introduced for the PS3 and PS Vita called Cross Buy. It enables PS Vita owners to get a free handheld copy of the same game when purchasing on PS3, but now we’ve heard some worrying information on how it may not be available to everyone straight away.
Sony made the glorious announcement during their GamesCom press conference, with the main attraction being a free copy of PlayStation All-Stars on the Vita when you buy the PS3 version first. We assumed that Sony would be making Cross Buy available to everyone at the same time, but some new comments by Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida reveals that this isn’t the case.
When speaking to Japanese publication Famitsu, Yoshida has said that Cross Buy is restricted to Europe for the time being, with no plans to roll out the incentive across America or Japan yet. The key thing to note here is that he isn’t saying that it definitely isn’t coming to US, but it does suggest that it may be available in Europe first.
Sony does like to confuse their fanbase from time to time though. This US blog post on the aftermath of their GamesCom conference clearly states that the Cross Buy incentive is going to be live for the upcoming Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time game – so what’s going on?
You can imagine the uproar if the free PS Vita version of PlayStation All-Stars is only available for Europe at launch. We’re guessing that Sony will confirm the incentive for the US closer to release, but Sony has done themselves no favors by saying that this is only for Europe so far.
What are your thoughts on this? Would you be very surprised if Cross Play only turned out to be a European feature only? Don’t forget that Sony made the UMD Passport Program exclusive to Japanese customers, which entitled users to discounts for digital copies of PSP UMDs that they already owned.
That itself was a shock to US Vita owners when they realized they wouldn’t be getting that feature. Is lightning about to strike again we wonder with Cross Buy?
