The iPad Air 2 is a decent improvement over its predecessor thanks to a faster processor and Touch ID, and seeing as though it has only been available for two months the last thing on people’s minds is its successor. However, we thought you might like to know that production has already started on the chip that will be used inside the iPad Air 3, and that is the Samsung A9.
Samsung has now started production of its A9 chip, and a percentage of them will be used in the iPhone 6S and iPad Air 3. They will incorporate Samsung’s 14nm process, although we do not have an idea of how much percentage Samsung will be supplying to Apple.
The South Korean company supplied the A8 chip to Apple, but not much of a share when compared to previous version. However, The Verge believes that Samsung will now have the lion’s share when they start to supply the A9 CPU to Apple.
We assumed that Apple would have preferred to stick with TSMC, but one must assume they were unable to handle demand put on them, as we know how popular Apple’s newest iOS devices can be.
Starting production is one thing, delivering to Apple is another, and so we have no timescale as to when Samsung will start delivering the A9 chip to its rival. One thing is certain though; Apple will want to start stockpiling the components needed for the iPhone 6S plus the iPad Air 3, as they don’t want a repeat of this year where they fell behind on fulfilling orders.
Shipments of these new iOS devices always seem to fall behind for a few weeks, but seeing as though Apple brought out two new iPhones and iPads, shipping fell behind for a longer period than we have seen over previous years.
