A few days ago we spoke about the food recall of the flavor enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) which was found to be contaminated with salmonella. There has since been an avalanche in the amount of foods being recalled. More than 56 food products have already been recalled in Canada and the U.S. — all of which were produced by the Nevada company.
Some of our most popular foods have been affected by this recall, such as chips, sauces, hotdogs, dips, frozen dinners and much more. The Vancouver Sun said that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency expects that the recall will widen — resulting in one of the largest food recalls in Canada and North America.
There are a number of companies that supply hydrolyzed vegetable protein to foodmakers, such as Basic Food Flavors, this is supplied in powder or paste form and can often be blended with spices.
The recall only affects all HVP manufactured before September 2009 — there have been no reported illnesses so far. For more details visit the Vancouver Sun.
