Price cuts not making impact on BlackBerry PlayBook sales

Recently we gave you the news that the BlackBerry PlayBook update will be delayed until next year, and won’t be bringing BBM compatibility along with it. Last month retailers began working with RIM to offer incentives to consumers and try and shift stock it had in its inventory. Now we can tell you that price cuts are not making any impact on BlackBerry PlayBook sales.

RIM’s tablet PC has failed to get consumers excited about purchasing one after sources have claimed sales remain weak. Channel Register are reporting that despite price cuts of up to $200 in the US, retailers wanted something extra to try and shift the estimated 500,000 units still sitting in warehouses across the world.

In the UK retailers Curry’s and PC World shaved a massive £150 off the price of the 16GB and 32GB models. These discounts have failed to make much of a difference with only a slight sale spike being reported, and the take up of the device since it was released remains slightly disappointing.

The price cuts came shortly after the fire sale of the HP TouchPad, which saw units quickly snapped up by consumers after a bargain. It has to be remembered though the TouchPad was being discontinued and the price was cut dramatically.

One of the main things the PlayBook has suffered from in its short life is the lack of features, currently there is no native email, chat app, 3G connectivity unless it’s connected to a BlackBerry handset. The company has rubbished rumors that the device was going to be killed off, and will be hoping to see its luck improve as new features are added.
