We knew that Porsche was looking to trademark the name GT5; well they have finally been granted it, so what does this mean? Well, it is obvious that Porsche is looking to develop a new motorsports version of one of its existing models, and recent rumors would suggest either the Panamera or Macan.
A Porsche GT5 Panamera or Macan would seem to be on the cards, although the German sports carmaker has yet to offer any precise details. Having said that, we do know that Andreas Preuninger, the head of the GT division has said there is room for more focused models.
This would mean it would be another model that will get the GT treatment, and so not one that has already been done. Another hint that the Panamera or Macan could be the next GT version is how Preuninger aknowaldges that the SUV has become a far more popular vehicle, and so stands to reason why there needs to be more motorsports-developed cars.
Autocar points out that in previous years the GT models have always been very low in sales, although the introduction of the Cayman GT4 changed things. This is because it was a more affordable model, and so increasing the appeal, which was always Porsche’s intention.
One more thing to consider, could the GT5 be the name for the new hardcore Boxter that’s due for release?
