The build-up to the Porsche 918 Spyder has been rather exciting, but it is the final release version that we have been looking forward to the most, which just so happened to take place yesterday during the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
We already knew most of the basic details, but we were missing some of the finer Porsche 918 Spyder specifications and features that will allow this vehicle to challenge the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari. However, it is a tough challenge, one the 918 Spyder may find difficult to win.
Porsche 918 Spyder main specs include a 4.6-liter V8 engine and a trio of electric motors; the former produces 608 horsepower and the latter 286 horsepower giving you a combined output of 887 hp.
Okay, so this does seem impressive, but it is the Porsche 918 Spyder performance figures we are a little concerned about. 0-62 mph takes 2.8 seconds, 124 mph will be reached in 7.7 seconds and 186 will happen in 22 seconds.
Now compare this to the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari, both will get to 62 mph in less than 3 seconds, 124 mph in less than 11 seconds and 186 in 17 seconds for the P1 and 17 seconds for the LaFerrari. It looks as though the Porsche 918 Spyder has the edge at first, but as it gets faster the Porsche begins to run out of legs.
Okay, so it is clear the Porsche 918 Spyder is the underdog, but it was always going to be like this because the price compromises specifications. Porsche want around $845,000, whereas the other two models will demand 7 figures.
At a guess we would say the Porsche 918 Spyder price will be around $150,000 less, and so we have no problem about losing a little performance at the top end to save that sort of money.
