There’s been a huge debate in regards to the powertrain for the Porsche 918 Spyder, because there are those who are not happy with this being a hybrid, as they would love to see the true performance of this vehicle. Okay, so we can understand where they were coming from, but their idea is flawed, because the vehicle has been designed to work with the electric motors, and so taking it out would diminish its weight distribution and its power output.
Porsche understand that they need to get things running perfectly, and so the 918 Spyder has been undergoing a huge amount of testing, around one million miles to be precise. The latest round of testing was to make certain that the vehicle would work fine in hot conditions, which you can see in the video below.
While the video is enjoyable to watch, the best part happens 37 seconds in, where you hear the Porsche 918 Spyder power transition, as she pulls off under power from the electric motor, and then you hear the roar from the 4.6-liter, eight cylinder engine, which produces 608 horsepower.
However, with the both working in unison, the Porsche 918 Spyder will produce 154 hp hybrid module on the rear axel and 126 horsepower on the front, all of which adds up to a combined figure of 887 horsepower. More specs can be found in our recent article here.
I do find it strange how we have heard some people suggest that certain buyers will opt to have the batteries removed once they take possession of their 918 Spyder next year. Now I cannot be certain, but I’m sure someone will not pay around $1 million for such a vehicle, and then take it to a garage from them to remove all the hard work Porsche engineers have gone through?
