As far as robot developments go, the more realistic the advanced humanoids become the scarier they become. Lucky for us the technology is nowhere near the level of human cyborg yet so the future of mankind is safe for now.
This new robot however advanced it may be looks more cute than scary I think you’d agree. POLYRO which gets its name from an acronym (oPen sOurce friendLY RObot) is a do-it-yourself humanoid. Think of it as a Build-A-Bear but the mechanical, less furry version.
Developed by Tim Payne who created PROTO-2 the humanoid combines with Willow Garage’s TurtleBot to become mobile. It comes with its own assembly instructions and if followed correctly can be built within a budget of $2000.
Some of the main ingredients needed to create the robot are a Kinect, ROS (Robot OS) and a 10.1” netbook. Check out Instructables where they have the full step by step guide and provide a list of materials and tools needed to bring POLYRO to life.
What do you think of this D.I.Y humanoid? Will you be building one? Let us know in the comments below.
