PlayStation Plus subscriptions on PS4 revealed

The amount of players who have signed up to the PlayStation Plus subscription on the PS4 so far has been revealed by Sony. Approximately half of PlayStation 4 owners have joined PS Plus, which gives gamers a variety of benefits including access to online multiplayer.

At the time of speaking CEO Kaz Hirai confirmed that of the 4.2 million PS4s to have been sold so far, more than 2 million reportedly had active PlayStation Plus subscriptions. Whilst a specific number was not announced, it is fair to assume that roughly 1 in 2 PS4 owners will opt to join PS Plus.

The subscription costs $5 a month and allows players to download games and content for free, such as new horror game Outlast on the PS4. As we mentioned a PS Plus membership is required to play online, where it was previously free on the PS3 PlayStation Network. Naturally the upgrades to Sony’s technology and servers are much better now, but the extra expense is being offset with this cost.

By the end of March Sony has predicted it will sell 15 million PS3s and PS4s combined, a target which could be met but appears challenging for now. Whilst Sony’s PlayStation franchise is clearly thriving, sadly their PC and TV sectors are struggling. We heard yesterday that they were laying off 5000 jobs and focusing their future on tablets and smartphones.

Are you a PS Plus subscriber on the PS4, if not what is the main reason for you not joining up?
