Firefox 48 beta is all set to go live very soon, and if all goes to plan, its release date could happen on August 2, 2016. This is set to be the biggest change to the browser, with Electrolysis (e10s) being such a huge deal to all that will use it.
It’s been almost a year since we were told that Firefox was going to change in a big way, and we are really just under 2 months away from that being realized. It’s going to be a huge deal because since Firefox’s director of engineering Dave Camp made that announcement back in 2015 there has been signs that developers have finally been won back – although we will only know for certain once the Firefox 48 beta download goes live.
Having said that, a small number of developers have already been testing out Electrolysis since just before the end of last year, and so it will be interesting to see what happens once Mozilla ramps up those number of beta testers in the coming days.
The engineers will only turn the knob up slow, and so the beta will not be made available to all testers at once. If they feel things are going ok, then the dial will be turned up, but if things start to go bad, then users being updated to e10s will be dialed back down once again.
It truly has to be a massive update if Mozilla and the Firefox team are talking about doing such a thing to keep things under control. However, if you are using add-ons, then you will be excluded from the early e10s roll-out.
