Pioneer at CEATEC 2013: HUD devices and Augmented Reality

CEATEC 2013 is well under way and Sony has already made their intentions clear with a range of new products to be released over the coming months. However, Pioneer has been looking at things a little different and wanted to show people at the event what they have been working on for several years now.

We have known for some time that Pioneer has been working on HUD devices and Augmented Reality, and it seems as though the company is making progress. With more companies moving into the Head up Display business it is no wonder Pioneer wants to be leading the way.

Having such a system on a car is said to help increase safety, as you will not need to shift your gaze away from the windscreen down to the dials. Pioneer currently has two systems; the first is the ND-HUD10 augmented reality system and the second ND-HUD10 AR HUD. Both are very different in the technology they use, and so this will reflect on effectiveness and price.

Fighter pilots have used HUD for years and we have already seen a few cars come with augmented reality, but this was only in its very basic form, and so there is a clear need to improve this technology for use in a car.

Being able to see the equivalent of a 30-inch display from three meters away will take some getting used to, but it never takes us long to adapt. However, we have to wonder if there will be an overload of information because it will be in your plain line of sight at all times?

We are certain there will be a huge number of safety tests by the NHTSA before HUDs becomes a standard in new vehicles.

More details on this technology can be found on Pioneer’s website.
