Peugeot EX1 sets lap record at the Nürburgring for an electric car

Electric cars have been in the news a bit lately with the Nissan Leaf wining the Car of the Year. The vehicles are mainly seen as city vehicles which are good for the environment, but a concept car the Peugeot EX1 has set the lap record at the Nürburgring for an electric car.

Eric Loveday from Autobloggreen is reporting that the car which made its debut at last year’s Paris Motor Show, managed to go round the famous circuit in 9 minutes and 1.338 seconds. The vehicle has an impressive amount of power with an electric motor fixed to each axle, which creates 250 kilowatts that is the equivalent to 340 horsepower.

The EX1 managed an average speed of 85.9 miles per hour around the twelve mile circuit, and smashed the previous record held by the Mini E of 9.51 set last year. When the Peugeot broke the lap record, it did so in damp and foggy conditions which means it may have gone round even faster if it was dry and sunny.

This does away with the notion that electric cars are just small city cars with no performance. It is not known if the EX1 will ever make it to showrooms around the world, but it’s a pretty impressive record to hold.
