Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS digital camera: Withstands almost everything

If you are an outdoorsy, adventuring type who’s looking to buy a digital camera that will withstand almost everything, then I think we have news that could well be of interest to you. Pentax has just unveiled its new Optio WG-1 GPS camera that is not only shockproof up to 1.5 meters and waterproof up to 10 meters, but is also crushproof to 100kg and coldproof to 10 degrees Centigrade.

According to Hunter Skipworth over on pocket-lint.com, the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS camera — which comes with an aluminum alloy front panel with gunmetal grey rubber — will be available in the UK sometime at the beginning of August for £299, and will be available in shiny orange, green and grey. It also comes with a geotagging function, which will record your location so you can show exactly where your pictures were taken.

With a 14-megapixel image sensor and a 5x wide-angle optical zoom, the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS camera is sure to deliver sharp and true-to-life photographs even when they are enlarged to poster size. Another great feature of the Optio WG-1 GPS is the digital microscope mode, which as noted over on the pentax.co.uk website will deliver sharp, magnified images of the microscopic world.

The Optio WG-1 GPS also boasts an extra-wide 16:9 2.7-inch LCD monitor, which has been treated with a special anti-reflection coating to make it easier to view, face detection that instantly and accurately detects up to 32 faces, a self-portrait assist function that uses LED lights to confirm when your face is centered in the image, and HD video recording that can be easily displayed on your HDTV via the micro-HDMI terminal.

Other features include triple anti-shake protection (Movie SR, Pixel Track SR and a High-Sensitivity anti-shake mode), a carabiner strap for hooking the camera to a backpack etc, an auto picture mode that will automatically select one of 16 different shooting modes or an optimum result, a digital wide function and compatibility with Eye-Fi wireless LAN SD memory cards.

The guys over at stuffmideast.com got a chance to spend a bit of hands-on time with the Pentax Optio WG-1 (the model without the geotagging function) camera recently, and have kindly written a review of the product. The review says that although its design does make it look a bit more toy-like than the Panasonic FT3 and the Olympus TG-810 cameras, it does make the Optio WG-1 lighter.

You can read more of their review over at stuffmideast.com. What do you think of the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS camera?
