Over half the UK population are Xbox and PlayStation gamers

It looks like gamers are no longer the geeks, as the population of non-gamers becomes the minority in the UK. In a recent report that was published in the Internet Advertising Bureau called Gaming Britain, it was discovered that over half the UK population are gamers of some degree.

As MCV explains, Britain’s population is currently estimated to be at 62 million with 32.9 million of those claiming they have played or play Xbox, PlayStation, Android and iPad video games online. The findings also revealed that most of these gamers were aged between 25 and 45 and 82% of the 8 to 65 year old internet users that were asked, were gamers.

When it came to gender, the finding found little differences with %1% of the online gamers being male and 49% being female. As you can imagine a high percentage of the gamers preferred first-person shooters but a surprising 49% of gamers preferred quiz and puzzle games compared to the 23% those accounted for the FPS gamers.

Head of Industry Programmes at the Internet Advertising Bureau, Jack Wellington says the new research ‘blasts many people’s preconceptions about the game-playing audience out of the water.’ He explains that the evidence shows that while many people would not consider themselves a gamer, nearly 33 million of them actually have played or do play games frequently making it to common to be classed as a niche.

While from a young age I have been into video games, very few of my friends would play them as much as me. As I’ve got older the amount of people I have met that are also into video game has increased, and this new research explains the reason why.

What were your preconceived views of gaming? Are you surprised at the findings?
