Nokia N8 (Symbian^3) Preview: An Embarrassment to Nokia

If you have been looking forward to the release of the upcoming Nokia N8 you may want to check out IntoMobile’s recent article, this article looks at some of the handset’s pros and con’s, the verdict is that the handset is an embarrassment to Nokia.

Firstly we must say that as is this is an early version of the handset running an early version of Symbian ^3 so we cannot make too much of a judgment, however a lot of changes will have to be made to rectify some of the biggest disappointments.

Firstly we will look at some of the biggest pros, these include a 12 megapixel camera which is capable of recording HD video at 720p, this camera takes photos which are apparently better quality than the Sony Ericsson Satio, however the video capture is not as good as it could have been, one other impressive feature is its multi-touch capable glass touchscreen.

The list of con’s is far more noticeable than the list of pros, apparently the OS is not much different to S60 5th Edition which was unimpressive for the Nokia N97, this makes the overall experience a slow one. The handset also uses a non standard HDMI connector (why?) and finally the early version of the handset allows dust to get under the screen (this may be easily resolved).

It could well be that the production version of this handset turns out to be a great success, however following owning the Nokia N96 and the Nokia N95 I think it is about time Nokia concentrated on other OS-based handsets, such as the Maemo OS used for the N900.

Do you think Nokia are letting themselves down? Or is Symbian holding their handset’s back?
