Nokia Lumia 800 UK SIM free gets delayed, not in time for Xmas

Yesterday we had the news that a carrier feels that Nokia’s smartphones are too expensive to shift in high numbers. Now today we have news that it you want the Nokia Lumia 800 without a contract you will have to wait as it has been delayed, and won’t be available before Xmas.

The handset is still available next week via a contract though, but Cnet are reporting of the SIM free delay via online retailer Clove. The device will not be available SIM free until the early part of next year, so you won’t be able to buy yourself the device as a Christmas present unless you agree to a lengthy contract.

This is not always such a good idea as in the long run it can work out more expensive getting the device this way, it just means there is no big outlay to begin with. The handset is quite a good looking device with some nice specifications, but the biggest thing is it will come running the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system.

Nokia is hoping the device helps it gain some market share on the Android and iPhone platforms, but things like this delay won’t help it much in its upcoming fight. There is probably nothing sinister about this delay, and could even be the device has proven highly popular with preorders on the carriers that will be providing the device in the UK.

It could just mean Nokia doesn’t want to upset those carriers and provide enough stock to keep them sweet. Are bothered about this delay of the SIM free version of the Nokia Lumia 800?

Update: Nokia have now said the device will be available SIM free on the 16th.
