As some smartphone manufacturers move towards quad-core processors in their devices at the earliest opportunity, it seems that others aren’t as keen to follow suit. Sony has just revealed that they have no plans to introduce any quad-core phones in 2012.
We have just seen quad-core phones such as the LG Optimus 4X, the ZTE Era and the HTC One x announced during or leading up to MWC 2012, but one company that won’t be joining the quad-core bandwagon is Sony. Instead, the company has just announced two new dual-core Xperia phones at MWC 2012 and recently confirmed that consumers will have to wait until 2013 at the earliest to see a quad-core smartphone from them.
There was an interesting statement from Sony’s Stephen Sneeden though as he revealed the news to CNET Asia. According to him, there is no point releasing a quad-core Xperia phone at the moment, because there are still barriers to overcome in relation to battery life, as he stated:
”We’re going to join quad-core when we feel that the performance matches the battery efficiency”
When you see the likes of the HTC One X with just a 1800 mAh battery compared to the dual-core Droid RAZR MAXX with a 3300mAh battery, we may have to agree with the argument he is making here. What is the point of releasing a new smartphone with the latest processor, if you are only going to end up with the same amount of battery life with no improvements from what consumers are currently used to seeing on Xperia smartphones today. Until we see quad-core phones with 3300 mAh batteries at the very least, battery life may still continue to be a problem.
With the disappointment aside on hearing that Sony won’t bring out a quad-core phone until 2013, do you agree that we need to see a major breakthrough in battery life performance first, ahead of dazzling hardware specs?
