The boss of Maserati does not have any plans to produce an all-electric car, although he is more than happy to start producing plug-in hybrid models.
According to Harald Wester, pretty much all of their models will come with a plug-in hybrid option, although there will be no Maserati Alfieri hybrid.
Even though the company has been very vocal in the past about embracing electric vehicles, this does seem like a compromise – one that the company was unable to forgot about because so many of their rivals are already doing it, and slowly leaving them behind.
We do sort of understand the argument Wester is trying to put across, saying that producing and deposing of electric vehicles actually uses more CO2 when compared to the most fuel-efficient normal engines out there.
What Maserati models will be offered with the plug-in hybrid option? – The Ghibli, GranCabrio, GranTurismo and the Quattroporte, and should enter production by 2020 in order to meet with average emissions targets.
Looking on Autocar, we can see that Maserati fans are not happy with the prospect of these plug-in hybrid models, saying that they should do what Aston Martin does and rebadge some other models under it umbrella, such as the Fiat 500. However, no one will force you to buy these models, and so you should just accept it.
