We are still uncertain when the official release date for the Droid Bionic will be announced, but there could be an added twist to the ongoing saga, as we could see an AT&T version. We know that this is good news for their customers who were feeling a little left out by not getting this 4G handset, but we also have some bad news for you. This might be a non-LTE version, due to the lack of infrastructure.
You have to ask yourself why AT&T would want to offer a Droid Bionic without 4G, as it is this feature that makes the handset so special? We could still be surprised, but we cannot see how AT&T can support such an important feature if they do not have the LTE network to back it up? This could all be speculation, but the image on IntoMobile is a little hard to ignore.
Sprint does not have the Bionic, but it does have another handset that will take the fight to Verizon, the Photon 4G, and looks to be a worthy contender. AT&T has the ATRIX 4G and is a more than capable phone, but again is let down with support for LTE in huge parts of the US. We are not saying that AT&T will not offer an LTE version of the Bionic; we are just saying that it is not plausible.
If this rumors does turn out to be true, then Verizon will be unfazed by this, because they have many more decent phones on or coming to the market. Having said that, AT&T has given them food for thought, and that is by announcing that all of their 2011 handsets will be updated to Gingerbread, something that Verizon has struggled with — especially with the HTC ThunderBolt.
We have to wonder if Motorola is now going down the path of Samsung with its Galaxy S range, and could start to offer their flagship models to multiple carriers? It would make perfect sense, as Samsung has had great success with this, as has Apple with their iPhone in other parts of the world — although they might now do the same for the US market as well with the iPhone 5?
So we know that this could all be a simple mistake, and that AT&T will not get the Droid Bionic, but if it did, then chances are T-Mobile will follow suit due to the impending partnership with each other. Sprint would not want to be left out, so could talk to Motorola about offering the Bionic to their customers as well.
