If you ask anyone what their fondest memories of legendary game developers Rare are, they would probably come back to you and say Golden Eye, Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct – no coincidence all three being some of the greatest games in history.
Unfortunately though, Rare was bought by Microsoft and it seems like the creativity that spawned those amazing Nintendo games have been put on the backburner indefinitely. We have seen new Golden Eye and Donkey Kong Country games come out since their originals, but Killer Instinct seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth.
Fans have been hoping to see a Killer Instinct 3 game for many years now and this week we have had some interesting comments from an ex-employee of Rare which we thought we would share with you. Donnchadh Murphy was a modeller for the company and revealed that the company had always expressed an idea to make Killer Instinct 3.
When speaking with Not Enough Shaders, he revealed that Microsoft had other ideas though and were more interesting in ‘broadening their demographic’, ie making a silly Kinect Sports game to try and compete with a certain Wii Sports from Nintendo. He also revealed in hindsight that their relationship with Microsoft was not a good mix – check out this quote below:
“At first it seemed that they wouldn’t interfere much, but it was soon clear that they were more interested in using Rare to help aim at a younger market. This stifled a lot of creativity, Rare was renowned for their diverse portfolio, so to not be involved in making Mature games was a real blow.”
We can’t imagine how gut wrenching it must have been for a developer with the calibre of Rare, having made a brutal mature game such as Killer Instinct, to be then told by Microsoft that you now have to make a kids game instead. It seems like Microsoft are missing the boat big time here as a Killer Instinct 3 exclusive on the Xbox 360 or even Xbox 720 would be a major attraction.
It’s a shame that Rare never continued on their own as we could have already seen Killer Instinct 3 release already on multiplatform. What are your thoughts on Microsoft’s decision to favor kids games and hold back Rare’s natural talent? Would you like to see Jago and co make a return in the future or not?
