Nintendo file patent for mystery DS cartridge device

It has been reported that Nintendo has just filed a patent for a mystery new ‘cartridge-like’ device, related to their Nintendo DSi handheld console. Could this be for existing hardware or new hardware we wonder? How exciting.

If you head over to Siliconera, you will be able to see a series of images that they have managed to upload – showing Nintendo’s latest patent in all its glory.

Figure 9 of the patent is the most revealing out of the images, as you can clearly see that this new device fits into the console, leaving the top half of the cartridge on view. Do you like the idea of this or not?

Obvious guesses would be, that this is just an extended game cartridge size – but we would like to think that it offers some other functionality as well, GPS or something related to Motion Sensing perhaps.

Have a look at the images for yourself, then let us know what you think of them.
