Nintendo 3DS sales disappoint as older DS models sell double the amount

Yesterday we had the news that the Nintendo 3DS had just received the video and Netflix applications via the eShop. As the lineup of 3D games and other features is growing for the console, Nintendo will be hoping that it will encourage more gamers to embrace the console. Today with have news that the Nintendo 3DS sales disappoint as older DS models sell double the amount of units.

This means that Nintendo’s flagship gaming console is being outsold two to one by the older versions of the device. According to an article on Electronista the sales data which was published by Nintendo, showed that combined sales of the Nintendo DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL had achieved 386,000 units in June.

This compares to the 3DS which only achieved 143,000 sales during the same period. Nintendo did manage to reach 3.5 million 3DS sales in the first two months of the console being released, but recently sales have dropped off a bit. Back in April the soon to be replaced Sony PSP outsold the 3DS.

The company has been having a tough time in recent months, as profits dropped by 66 percent in the fiscal year ending in March. The Wii console has now fell a long way behind the monthly sales of the Xbox 360. It had hoped the launch of the 3DS would halt its sales slide, and boost its overall sales.

During the first half of next year the company is planning to launch its new home console the Wii U, the follow up to the original Wii will have the new touchscreen controller with more powerful graphics. One thing this news will give to Nintendo is that it will have to delay phasing out its old DS models as they are selling so well.

Thing is later this year Sony will be bringing out its new Vita handheld console, which could further affect sales of the 3DS. The console has got mixed reviews since its launch, with some owners complaining of headaches, but others have praised it. Nintendo must have hoped for bigger sales of the console, and some retailers have even taken to discounting the console recently.

Have you purchased a 3DS? Why do you think sales of the console have been slow?
