Nexus 7 16GB stock gone in UK and US

The Nexus 7 has surprised Google in a number of ways over the few days since release, and the latest news surrounds a lack of stock for the 16GB Nexus 7 tablet. We spoke about the price and delivery dates for Tesco and Dixons earlier this week and following this article we had an email from one PR reader, Chris Wright, and he explained to us that his Tesco order for a “Asus Google Nexus 16GB 7-inch Tablet” had been rejected after taking his money.

Wright said “just got this back from Tesco, they either have it in stock or they don’t” and then continued to explain he had asked Tesco for an answer on their change of stock status. Tesco simply said to Mr. Wright “we’re sorry, but we’re unable to complete your Tesco Direct order“. They then credited his payment card immediately, although this email from Wright is just one of many orders being rejected by Tesco.

We can reveal that not only is Tesco turning down orders for the 16GB Nexus 7, but the Google Play store has also stopped taking orders today. If you head to Google’s online shop you’ll see that the 16GB stock is gone in both the UK and US, which explains you need to sign up to be notified by email, so there is no guide for when new stock will arrive.

You can order the 8GB Nexus 7 at Google, not at Tesco, and the tablet will be delivered within 3-5 business days. The problem Google has is they underestimated the demand for the 16GB model, and also the lack of interest in the 8GB model. It seems that most people understand they are likely to use more storage space these says, and as such want the biggest storage on offer.

Would the 8GB Nexus 7 tablet be enough for you? You can expect Asus to be building as many 16GB models as possible, although it will likely be weeks before these arrive in consumer hands. This news follows a report earlier today about quality issues with the Nexus 7, which can be seen in videos here.
