Next-gen LTE iPhone may miss Summer release

With Apple having reached a company milestone by releasing their first iPad device with 4G LTE connectivity, there is obvious expectation that they will now go on and equip the next-generation iPhone with a 4G LTE radio as well.

Put it this way, if the next iPhone does not have 4G LTE support, that is going to be a major blow for consumers, especially when rival manufacturers have been offering 4G LTE smartphones for months now.

Recent rumors this week though have spoke of alleged problems that LTE chip supplier Qualcomm are facing, as the company are apparently struggling to meet Apple demand ahead of an expected release this Summer. Demand problems usually mean one thing – release delays, with an article from Reuters suggesting that these problems may cause Apple to release their next iPhone in October or November instead, rather than Summer.

Having said that, a Holiday 2012 release wouldn’t really be a surprise for all concerned. Apple may have released their latest iPad in March, but you’ll probably remember that they chose an October release for the iPhone 4S. A similar release pattern may end up happening for the next iPhone, but we would much rather see the device unveiled at WWDC 2012, to return to a tradition of seeing brand new hardware at the showpiece event.

Would it be such a bad thing if the next iPhone appeared in October, or would you still prefer to see it at WWDC instead? As long as it does have 4G LTE, we have a feeling that not many people will be concerned about the exact timing of release. Don’t forget to read interesting rumors this week about a next-gen iPhone using LiquidMetal materials.

Curious comment Al, Exactly why would “we” rather see the device unveiled at WWDC 2012? Is that the show you have tickets for? I would think most consumers who want an iPhone would want the latest and greatest ASAP. Apple hosts their own unveiling (as you well know) and it’s covered by everyone on Earth. Apple creates their own buzz and doesn’t need WWDC to get all the publicity they need. The only company or entity that stands to benefit from a delay of the new Apple iPhone LTE is Sprint. There is no reason to buy a LTE iPhone… Read more »
