New Sony PS4 whispers include no audio CD support

It’s good to see that there are continued PS4 details slipping out, despite the fact that the next major reveal on the next-gen system probably won’t come until E3 2013 in June. The latest rumor on the PS4 though is a somewhat controversial one though, as we’re hearing that Sony will block the playback of Audio CDs on the console, despite accepting the Blu-Ray disc format for games.

Although this may be interpreted as a major feature loss if it becomes true, we dare say that the majority of prospective PS4 owners will not mind too much about this. How many of you can honestly say that you regularly put audio CDS into your PS3 for playback as a preference to using other methods?

The source has come from a respected Japanese journalist, who has sent out a Tweet with the information claiming that Sony told him personally. Aside from the lack of CD playback, the PS4 will also not have support for Super Audio CDs either. With the switch to digital formats though and the ever growing push on streaming based music, is it such a shock that Sony may block CD playback?

Don’t forget that users should be able to put music on a USB stick anyway and have the PS4 play back the music this way, if really necessary. Another alternative is to just hop on to the web browser and visit sites such as Grooveshark for a quick music streaming fix.

Of course, it would be nice if CD playback was included, but we don’t think it should be a mandatory feature. Gaming is the main focus here remember, so let us know what you think of this move if Sony really intends to follow through with it.
