New Macbook Pro 2011: Upgraded specs compared with old models

Earlier on this week we told you that a new refresh to Apple’s Macbook Pro lineup was incoming, and we’re pleased to say that the refresh has happened earlier than expected. If you visit the Apple Store now, you’ll see that a quiet update has happened to current models.

If this is the first time that you’ve heard about the Macbook Pro refresh, we can tell you that Apple has given all models a processor upgrade, as well as an increase in storage space as well on the hard drive. There’s even a slightly better graphics card to choose from for customers that opt for the 15-inch or 17-inch models – you’ll now get a AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics card, compared to the AMD Radeon HD 6750M option that was available a few days ago.

The most pleasing aspect of the upgrades, is that pricing will remain exactly the same, meaning that the most expensive 17-inch Macbook Pro will still come in at $2499 USD as before, but you’ll now get a 2.4Ghz quad-core Intel i7 processor to play around with, compared to the 2.2Ghz processor on previous models.

If you would like to see a comparison of changes between the two models, you’ll find the images below very useful, courtesy of 9to5Mac. It’s always nice to see better specs at the same price, but many consumers may feel like the price still needs to drop considerably before they even think about picking up one of the new Macbook Pros. Then again, many consumers love the premium approach to buying a new Apple Mac, so it all depends on your finances.

We’ve had a quick peek at the UK and HK stores as well as the US and we can confirm that the new Macbook Pro specs are already live on these stores too – meaning that this is likely to be a global update hitting all stores worldwide. Is now the right time to purchase a Macbook Pro, or are you happy with your current PC / laptop?
