Later this year we expect Apple will offer a new iPad mini to the masses, but if you are expecting several upgrades, such as a Retina display, then you could be in for a surprise. The reason we say this is because what has made the current model so popular is its price, and if the 2nd-generation model was to have the rumored specification upgrades, then this could come at a cost.
It’s for this reason where there are now suggestions that emphasizes the iPad mini 2 price is a far more important factor to help drive up sales, and so we could see future enhancements staggered. Let us say for arguments sake that the new model will be released as early as next month, then we would not expect much in the way of upgrades — although such a premature release is highly unlikely.
A recent article has looked at many of the key features of the iPad mini and feels that it is too soon to even want a new display seeing as though most owners are happy with what they have. Because many users of the smaller iPad are light users they will hardly use the tablet to its full potential anyway.
Having said that, those rumors of a new model just won’t go away, and a recent sighting shows that it could have an aluminum rear case making it a little thicker. As always we need to take these rumors with a grain of salt. Whatever Apple decides to do we know that they will not want to increase the price of the iPad mini, so when the 2nd-gen model is released we expect the price to stay the same, which could mean just a minor upgrade at best.
Apple has created a new market segment here and currently are top dog, and with pressure from the Nexus 7 and other such Android devices being released at competitive prices, Apple cannot afford to take their eye of the ball for one moment.
