Google Maps has recently seen an update to its Street View, although one might wish to call it River View instead. The search engine giant has been on a raft once again and now offers new imagery of the Colorado River.
They have already done the same down the San Francisco shoreline, so it was the obvious step to take imagery of the North Canyon, Deer Creek Falls, Nankoweap Granaries and other parts of the Colorado River.
We have never been to these wonderful rivers and so it is nice to take a trip down them thanks to Google, but nothing can substitute the real thing. However, by not visiting the place ourselves it reduces the risk of damaging the area, which as we know has been around for 6 million years.
The river is now at more risk than it has ever been and so it is Google’s hope that this new imagery will raise awareness for the river, as like so many places around the world, we take them for granted and before long the damage will be irreversible.
The demand on the river is now that great that its levels are dropping at an alarming rate and by the time it reaches the Gulf of California it is just a shadow of what it once was.
