New BlackBerry Torch: Processor Speed To Low?

These days high-end smartphones have to tick a lot of boxes to be considered great, therefore when we heard that the recently announced BlackBerry Torch 9800 features a 624MHz processor we were slightly worried whether this was fast enough for today’s standards.

From what we can see the BlackBerry Torch’s 624MHz processor is similar or the same as the BlackBerry Bold 9700’s, I own a Bold 9700 and it is not at all sluggish, however I can’t help feel that RIM should have perhaps upped the CPU to make OS 6.0 run faster and to help future-proof the handset.

This year has been a huge year for smartphones, we have seen impressive handsets such as the iPhone 4, Motorola Droid X, HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Galaxy S launch, all of which feature chips running at roughly 1GHz, does this mean that the 624MHz chip in the Torch is not fast enough?

Well in my opinion the answer is yes and no, a lot depends on the operating system, if RIM’s BlackBerry OS 6.0 is coded well you should get great performance and functionality from the chip, however smartphones with a 1GHz chip will have far superior potential in terms of multimedia capabilities.
