New Apple TV 2010: Specs, Price, Release Date and Hands On

We have seen a fair few Apple announcements today, the new iPod Touch, Shuffle and Nano to name a few, but undoubtedly the dark horse of the show is the reveal of Apple TV with its updated features.

No more storage device, that is long gone as Apple are aiming for the skies, or the “cloud” to be more exact. This will allow streaming HD movies and TV shows using Netflix, purchased from Apple’s iTunes store which also received an update of its own.

Apple TV can stream movies from the internet or other mobile devices such as the iPad, or other iOS operating systems directly to our television sets. It does this by using its very own Wi-Fi functionality and also comes with an HDMI output.

So when will this device go on sale? You can get Apple’s update of Apple TV in four weeks, but you can pre-order the device right now via Apple.

Apple TV costs just $99, and for that price its impossible to see what all the fuss is about. This is a huge step away from the former Apple TV device that will be replaced, and also cost a whopping $229.

UPDATE – We have just been informed that the device will be streaming at 720p video only, as Apple say this is a happy medium of quality and streaming speed. Sounds about right to us. Again, you can’t complain for the price, or can you? What are you first impressions of Apple TV? Will you be purchasing?

Why do we need to convert movies! are you kidding me?(ApplepayTV) WDTV is the real Media Center and can play all format without any problem and you can use an old TV plug like RCA for peoples who cannot spend for lcd or plasma!
Apple just fool young peoples who like spend time for jailbreaking their system and pretend been wise LOL

I had an old Apple TV and I sold on ebay last week in preparation for the new model. I can't wait for the new faster model to be released. I think streaming content is the way to go. I only ever used my old 40GB Apple TV to stream, and now that the new model can also stream photos, who needs a hard drive. If you have .AVI, MKV or WMV files convert them to .MP4 files using any of the the programs out there (google it) and add them to iTunes. Fill up your computer hard drive and… Read more »

i have an apple tv love the hell out of it. any movies i have i just convert them, then dump them into itunes. cant wait for the new tv, and cheaper viewing content.

I have an Apple TV and it is great. Was hoping that Apple would expand the types of files that ITUNES plays (I have alot of video files in WMV format) but I guess that was too much to ask…

Not quite a HTPC, but regardless of it's (multiple) short-comings it is hard to argue against it for the price (especially, if like many potential buyers, you also own an iPod and/or iPad).

The more interesting question is what will become of the existing apple TV hardware – will future software updates be compatible and, if so, will it also be able to stream netflix queues, etc?

We have an old Apple TV–bought it thinking that this was the solution to storing discs. I have several movies purchased on the device, and they look like crap, even when in HD. We struggled with whether to buy a Apple TV or Blu-Ray, and were reassured the quality would be fine with out 1080 DLP. Baloney! Now we feel cheated! We have a Mac Book and MAc book Pro (both awesome), along with an iPhone 3G. Apple has always been great until now, but this new Apple TV really ticks me off! Now I am thinking very seriously about… Read more »

Apple may appear to ressurected this TV from the grave, but on the long run. Users would realize that this TV, isn't exactly the TV they're hoping for, in their homes. Apple TV Early Impression
