New 3DS region lock doesn’t follow Sony example

Nintendo has just announced a lovely new 3DS to the world and after giving you some information on how the new handheld compared to the old model yesterday, we now have some information for you regarding the new 3DS region lock.

If you were hoping that Nintendo would change their policy on region locking for the new 3DS due out this year in Japan, think again. We can confirm that the new system is still going to be region locked, meaning that EU and UK systems will not be able to import games from Japan and vice-versa.

Many DS lovers will say that some of their all-time favourite games have been imports from Japan but unlike Sony, it appears that Nintendo are holding firm.

Sony made a lot of gamers happy when they announced years ago that the PS3 would be region free allowing gamers to import to their heart’s consent with no penalty. They continued this trend with the PS Vita and again with the PS4 and many gamers constantly question why Nintendo do not adopt the same system.

They are obviously very protective of their IPs, especially when it comes to their Japan wing which usually retains all of the super-exclusive goodies such as limited edition consoles.

For the foreseeable future though, your Nintendo system and games will only be playable in the country that you purchased them from. Is this a problem for you as you consider a new 3DS purchase next year? Give us your reaction to this.
