Gamers are now at a crossroads when it comes to the Sony and Microsoft consoles; in one hand they will want the new Xbox 720 or PS4, but in another there is no need, as the current gen just keeps improving. Both consoles have received a number of updates since their original launch, not only in terms of hardware tweaks but also software as well.
However, it is the Xbox 360 that is about to receive the biggest improvement, and that is all thanks to the upcoming Windows 8 integration. This will certainly be one in the eye for PlayStation 3 fans, as there is no telling just how much Microsoft’s console will now be able to evolve — so this could delay the launch of the 720, or whatever it will be called.
There are those who would say that a next-gen console is not needed because of these new updates, but there will be a time when game developers will want more — we have already seen what they are prepared to offer if they had more powerful hardware to work with. There is talk that GTA 5, Gears of War 4 and Forza 5 will be launched on the Xbox 720, but as you may well know, it’s all just rumor — we just don’t know if and when Sony and Microsoft will commit to new consoles. However, we suspect that both companies are already working on successors to their current consoles.
For some reason Examiner believes that the PS4 will see the light-of-day before the Xbox 720. We had expected to see the latter this year, but that is less likely now. However, there are still rumors that Microsoft could offer us something new next year. Sony has suggested that the PlayStation 4 will be with us in 2012 or 2013, so that would mean that the 360 successor will not even make a showing during E3 next year either — oh the confusion.
This whole saga is a little like a soap opera, and it is only the writers or in this case Microsoft and Sony who knows just what is going on.
