Need for Speed movie success with $63.4 million taken already

Moviegoers may be a bit sceptical when it comes to film adaptations of videogames but it seems the recent release of Need for Speed last week has been the third-highest grossing movie in the US. After debuting in cinemas on Wednesday 12th March, this film has managed to accumulate $63 million at the box office worldwide.

Coming in behind Mr. Peabody and Sherman and 300: Rise of an Empire this new entry has generated $17.8 million alone in the States and after costing $66 million to produce this movie is now starting to profit from the mass audiences around the globe.

According to Dave Hollis, the distribution chief for Dreamworks, “It’s a disappointing start on the domestic side,” but the number that has turned up worldwide nearly match the budget, resulting in Need for Speed success.

This gives us reason to contemplate how well the likes of Assassin’s Creed and World of Warcraft will do on the big screen, although The Hollywood Reporter highlights the domestic side of this with the film stalling at $17.8 million losing out to the likes of Peabody and the 300 sequel in the States.

A breakdown of how this film is being received throughout different territories is highlighted as they see which audiences prefer this latest release after taking around $45.6 million from 40 territories. According to statistics, Chinese audiences have been a main contributor with a $21.2 million launch in China.
