Motorola Defy: Android 2.2 Froyo – Release Date Update for US / UK

We have some good and bad news for those of you with a Motorola Defy handset now, as although Motorola has just confirmed that the handset will be receiving a taste of Android 2.2 Froyo, users will have to wait a good while to get it.

What do we mean by good while? – Q2 2011 according to Motorola. As Phandroid reports, the update will first be landing for Defy owners in Europe, Asia, Middle East, meaning that those of you in the US will have to wait even further.

While any software update is good, you have to remember that in Q2 2011, Gingerbread and Honeycomb are likely to be the default options for many android smartphones and tablets, and to think that Motorola is only pushing out Froyo to Defy owners at that period – well it’s pretty disappointing isn’t it.

As a Defy owner, what are your thoughts on this? Happy you are getting it still, or mad that it will still be outdated with the likes of Gingerbread and Honeycomb in town? Give us your thoughts on this.

I bought my Defy in Asia, and now I’m in the US. How come it won’t upgrade to Froyo? Everytime I check for system updates, it’s just telling me that it’s not available. What do I do?

I have the Defy also. As far as speed I can flip thru home screens as fast as I can swipe my finger across the screen, REALLY fast. Just how fast does it need to be? And i have two home screens packed full of quick dial numbers with pictures not to mention the widgets. Plenty fast for me. After my one year warranty runs out I may put Honeycomb or gingerbread on it.

Can we get the exact date that Motorola will officially release Android 2.2 for the Defy in Australia / UK / US etc?

I have a Defy. Speed is important to me, and with a newer version of android smartphones get better performance. It is clear that scrolling the interface on the Defy is often not as smooth as it should be. Motorola have said that the Android 2.2 experience on the Defy is smoother. It is important that Motorola rolls out Android 2.2 and 2.3 to customers that aren’t technically savvy enough to hack their phones, or don’t wish to void their warranties. It is great that the Defy can survive a dunking in water, and that it has such a bright,… Read more »

I have a Defy,. I don’t really care if it has 2.1 or 2.2, there is not much difference. I’m and engineer and my defy gets covered in allsorts all the time and works like a dream. I don’t think you could say that for any other phone on the market.

Ah, I still like my Defy, it's doing a "maintanence update" right now, which concerns me, because I use to have a motorola backflip, and learned the hard way when the "maintanence update" bricked my phone, so I'm a little nervous. After doing a little research between Android 2.1 and 2.2, I'm not seeing a HUGE difference, like there was between 1.5 and 2.1 with live wallpapers, etc, that is really going to make me impatient. However, I do have to agree that having a brand new device that runs an old OS sucks, and even thought I come from… Read more »

Why the wait? Need 2.2 now. If I had known I was sentenced to such a long wait, I wouldn't have bought three Defy's.
