Moto X receives Android 4.4 KitKat release upgrade

Verizon has distanced itself from tradition over the past few months because they have now made Android 4.4 KitKat available to select Moto X owners. Big Red did something similar with the Galaxy S4 when it was updated to 4.3, so nice to see this was not a one-off.

We need to remind you that this is not a full rollout of the Moto X Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade, but it is a start and hopefully will not be long before a public release is ready for download.

The US carrier is calling this limited upgrade a soak test, and so only selected Moto X users will benefit from the Android 4.4 KitKat update. The experiences from those users will be noted and if all goes to plan, then we could see a full rollout in weeks, or maybe sooner.

This is a big deal for Verizon because the Moto X is now being enjoyed on selected handsets from Motorola even before Nexus devices. Not only that, but Big Red also has the jump on AT&T, which seems strange considering AT&T was giving preferential treatment when it came to customization of the Moto X from day one.

Some of the new features seen in the Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade are specific to the Moto X, which will see much-needed bug fixes, changes to the camera app and even improvements to the touchless control. More details on these changes can be found on Android Community.

The Nexus 5 was already released with KitKat installed, and just last week the Nexus 7 and 10 received the update. However, there is no news on when the Nexus 4 will benefit from the update or when other Android handsets will get it.
