Remember the heavily rumored Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection game that was due to release alongside Mortal Kombat at the start of the year? The good news is that the game is finally available to buy on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but the bad news is that the terrible online mode within each of the games are causing so much problems that it is borderline unplayable for most die hard Mortal Kombat fans.
If you haven’t picked up the Arcade Kollection yet, it is available to buy now from the Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Store for 800 Microsoft Points or $9.99 from the relevant store. Despite the brilliant gameplay and that pleasant retro trip down memory lane gameplay, it’s once again the poor online code of each of the three games (MK1, MK2 UMK3) that changes the justification of the Kollection from a must have to a ‘I’m only buying the Kollection to perform Jax’s arm rip from MK2’ type of game.
We say once again, as you may remember the separately released Mortal Kombat 2 game on the PlayStation Network had terrible online play as well, complete with shoddy leaderboards and the blandest interface you’ve ever seen in your life. Unfortunately, it looks like the Arcade Kollection has fallen victim to the same tactics, as it looks like a rushed job with Warner Bros looking for a few quick sales to cash in after the sucessful and excellent Mortal Kombat reboot game, which I’m happy to admit am still addicted to.
Aside from the obvious lag problems, there are countless other issues in the online portion of the game that we’re sure you’re already aware of. These include three boring interfaces which makes the King of the Hill interface on MK look like something out of Crysis, the fact that you can’t see the opponent’s name during play, no replays, no spectating, no switching games while still connected to a friend and much more.
There was a great chance to reintroduce these timeless classics to new fans of the franchise, but unless the online mode is given a complete makeover, we wouldn’t recommend this painful experience to anyone. If you have been having a similar experience online with the game, let us know how you are feeling right now.
