Moondial puzzle during Skyrim Dawnguard review

While working through the Chasing Echoes objectives during our Skyrim Dawnguard review we met a puzzle, which had been in the form of a moondial, and considering Castle Volkihar is full of vampires a Sundial wouldn’t be as much fun for them. If you don’t want to see any spoilers then stop reading now, although those of our readers than want to know a little more about the location of moondial pieces should read on.

During the Chasing Echoes quest you will be asked to “Investigate the moondial“, which lies in Volkihar’s courtyard and had been used by Valerica, Serana’s mother. When you arrive in the courtyard Serana explains that something is wrong with the moondial, and after taking a closer look we noticed some moondial pieces were missing.

This is just another puzzle within Skyrim Dawnguard and it is much simpler than most. You only need to hunt around the courtyard for any moondial pieces, and then place them where it tells you to on the moondial. Once you have found all three pieces and placed them correctly you’ll see a hidden passage open up, which would lead you down some steps and into Castle Volkihar’s ruined tower. This is all part of your journey to find out what happened to Valerica, and will lead you to another major choice you’ll have to make when you do find out.

We have also included a short video below this article that shows you exactly where the moondial pieces are, so have a watch if you cannot find one.

Are you enjoying Skyrim’s Dawnguard DLC, and if you are on the PC / PS3 will you be purchasing the moment it releases? You can read about reasons why the PS3 and PC launch could be delayed in this article.
