Modern Warfare 2 on PS3 and Xbox 360: What was learned?

Activision are now spreading the word that its Modern Warfare 2 game for the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 has now reached the $1 billion mark. The game has now joined an elite group of entertainment products that has managed to do the same.

Activision Blizzard CEO, Robert “Bobby” Kotick said that in its first day of sales, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold around $550 million worth of games, something that took, Avatar, The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince five days to achieve.

However, we have to remember that the price of a movie ticket is much lower than that of Modern Warfare 2; Ars Technica does state that gamers are prepared to pay this price, whereas moviegoers are not. The sales figures could have been far greater, but the lack of support for the PC version has left a bitter taste in PC gamers’ mouths.

Before a game is launched, game websites normally get a review copy to try out and offer a non-bias opinion on a game. However, this was not the case with Modern Warfare 2, the review had to be done in front of Activision. The websites did not like the idea of this, but they knew that it was what their readers wanted.

This does show just how powerful game developers has got, who else do you know who can fly journalists to Santa Barbara and dictate to them how they wish a review to go?
