Miracast Dongle, Microsoft’s answer to Apple TV and Chromecast

We know that there are already several alternatives to Apple TV and Chromecast, but if you were looking for another choice, then the Miracast Dongle could be it, which looks set to be released in 2014. The device has shown up on the FCC website and there is a good chance that it will make a showing at IFA during Microsoft’s Lumia event, which takes place on September 4th.

If you were to look at the drawing on FCC you will not be able to work out just what it is, which goes by the codename Microsoft HD-10. However, Nokiapoweruser was able to dissect all the information that Microsoft Mobile provided and said that it is in fact a Miracast Dongle.

Little is known about the device, but we do know it supports Wi-Fi b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct, and comes with USB and HDMI ports.

Some of you might wonder why it would be a rival to Apple TV, when it is clear that it is more like Chromecast? Ok, so we can understand why you would say that, but the Miracast and Chromecast dongles use a feature that Apple has made so popular, and that is mirroring.

Windows Phone 8.1 users can already make use of this feature, but not many TV sets supports it, and so that is why Microsoft needs to take a leaf out of Google’s book and make the feature more mainstream for Windows Phone users.

Do you think that dongle will be a success for Microsoft, or is it just another case that the company is playing catch-up?
