Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 Hacked: Open Source Driver Now Available

We have some rather interesting news to bring you in the form of Microsoft‘s new device — Kinect, with the even bigger news that it has now been hacked and an open source driver is now available and ready for download.

Just two days ago, we reported than Kinect had been hacked but it seemed as though only half of the job was done. In the video at the end of this post, we will show you a fully working hack that shows the camera device working on a Linux machine.

Hector Martin, the guy who has hacked Kinect said it was pretty easy to get into, although Microsoft supposedly locked the technology so it was hack-proof. It’s fair to say they failed.

The good thing about this driver is that you do not need an Xbox 360 to use it. The driver has been made open-source and can be found on Hector’s Git Page.

Have you tried the driver yet? Does it work?
