MacBook Air gets new SSD option for 2012

It’s not going to be possible for a number of people to upgrade their Apple MacBook to a new Air model this year and RunCore understand this, which is exactly one of the reasons why they would launch a new Rocket Air SSD right before the release of a new MacBook Air and Pro for 2012.

If you have a Mid 2011 MacBook Air then the latest option from RunCore is said to deliver around “4x the capacity” found in your Apple fitted solid state drive, which will provide data transfer rates that exceed 500MB/s. This means greater performance and more storage capacity for those that don’t mind upgrading a MacBook Air, rather than splashing out on the latest 2012 model.

The main features for RunCore Rocket Air SSDs include enhanced endurance by dynamic/static wear-leveling, up to 55 bits correctable per 512-byte sector, 128-bit AES-compliant data encryption, Tier 1 Toggle Synchronous NAND and SATA III interface, and measures 108.9x24x3.2mm. You can see more detailed specs below, or feel free to visit the product page on the official website here.

If you don’t have an old MacBook Air to upgrade then you might want to think about the latest 2012 MacBook Air that is expected within a few months, or even the soon to be thinner MacBook Pro, which should arrive at WWDC 2012.

Some experienced Apple users also warn to be careful when upgrading, and offer advice to wait a few weeks after the release of a new product so that the bugs are ironed out, although this is something we’ve never done and normally just jump in considering most issues get fixed with software updates. Our report earlier today about quality fears with the new 2012 MacBook Pro received feedback from a few of our readers that had experienced problems with the 2011 Pro model, although these might be isolated cases.

Are you thinking about a new 2012 MacBook Air, or would you consider upgrading an old model?
