LEGO Group announces free-to-play trial of LEGO Universe

Earlier on today we told you that the hugely popular City of Heroes game would be going free-to-play at some point later in the year, although we unfortunately couldn’t give an exact date. Now we have just received word that another massively multiplayer online game is going to be receiving a free-to-play version, only this time it is NetDevil and The Lego Group’s LEGO Universe.

The LEGO Universe game has received several content updates, enhancements and a number of new gameplay features since it was officially released back in October 2010. LEGO Universe — which is the very first MMOG to be based on the popular LEGO brick-building play experience — enables players to build, battle, explore, make new friends and even bring their wildest creations to life.

As noted over on the website, the free-to-play version, which begins sometime this August, will enable gamers to test out the LEGO Universe game for free for as long as they want, before they decide whether or not they want to become paid subscription members. What’s more is that players won’t need the game DVD to play LEGO Universe, as it will only be available as a digital download.

The LEGO Universe game will continue to generate its revenue through paid subscription, and there are no current plans for micro-transactions. Those who are interested will be able to test out the free-to-play trial for an unlimited amount of time, but will also have the option of paying $10 a month to become a LEGO Universe member, which will then provide them with full game access.

One downside to the free-to-play experience is the fact that it will only offer a limited amount of game content. This includes one player property to use for building virtual LEGO models, and two adventure zones. Paying members on the other hand will be provided with access to all areas in the full game, as well as certain membership benefits such as community events and competitions.

You can read more about the LEGO Universe online game over on the website, where you can also keep up to date with all the latest news and view trailers if and when they arrive. Are you already a LEGO Universe member?
