The Leap motion sensor looks set to take us further into the world of that seen in the likes of Tom Cruise’s Minority Report, as this intuitive gadget picks up individual hand and finger movements for you to interact directly with your computer. This tiny iPod sized device allows users to gain up to 8 square feet of 3D interaction space and endless possibilities.
There are countless uses for Leap’s motion sensor controller and we can see this being used to enhance plenty of environments whether it’s at work or at home. In an article on the Leap Motion website, they document the various uses including artwork and gaming, as well as the opportunity to use this in working environments like engineering and healthcare. One suggestion refers to those performing surgery and this is the ideal way for surgeons to keep in contact without having to remove their gloves on every occasion.
To start off, the Leap Motion controller just plugs into the USB port and once the dedicated software is loaded you are able to control the computer with just a wave of a hand. As many regard this as a breakthrough in technology, once it is seen in action it does not seem to be that technical at all. According to some this is 200 times more accurate than anything else available on the market, tracking your individual finger movements down to one hundredth of a millimeter.
Available for pre-order at $69.99 the Leap motion sensor looks great in action, but don’t take our word for it and check out a collection of hands-on videos below featuring its appearance at CES 2013.
