Popular social networking website Facebook has seen a fair few scams and viruses over the past year or so, and many of the scams and viruses have either been related to celebrities or aimed at their fans. Among them was a scam that targeted Justin Bieber fans and a virus that claimed Charlie Sheen was dead.
However, according to a recent article over at entertainmentwise.com, the latest Facebook scam is targeting Twilight Saga fans. Scammers are making out as though they are linking to a Facebook game that promotes the upcoming Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn movie starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
The scam is then activated once a user clicks on the ‘Play now’ button. Once users click the said button, a post appears on their wall announcing that they have ‘liked’ the link. Users are then shown a dialogue box that asks them to give a third party application permission to access their Facebook account.
CEO of regional Sophos distributor, Sophos South Africa Brett Myroff said that it’s actually a rogue application that is trying to make money out of Twilight Saga fans. Once the scammers gain access to users’ Facebook accounts, they present an online survey that earns them money for each person who completes it.
