Killers of Apple’s iPhone 5 named weeks before release

Nearly everyone in the world owns a mobile device of some sort. Most of those devices are some form of mobile phone. One device that has revolutionized the mobile phone industry is the smartphone. When it comes to smartphones, one of the market leaders and among the first that helped the revolution is the Apple iPhone.

The growth of the iPhone sales over the past three years has been phenomenal and speaks for itself. Since the iPhone 3G released in 2008 sales of the devices have rocketed, selling over six million in Q4 and over eleven million iPhones in total that year.

The launch of the iPhone 4 really has cemented the device as the one to beat however, as so far this year over thirty-four million of the handsets have been sold. It is no wonder that that every new smartphone that gets released from other manufacturers nowadays aims to be the ‘iPhone killer.’

We have heard of many potential killers of the iPhone in the past especially where consumers of Verizon Wireless devices were concerned. When they actually came round to getting released however, they only left customers disappointed and the iPhone sales remained undented.

One of the smartphones that was among those named tipped to be iPhone Killers in the past was the T-Mobile G2, months before its actual release. Now that Apple’s new device, the iPhone 5, is due for release at some point this year we’re hearing the same old story with a couple of names emerging as potential iPhone killers again. These are the Nexus 4G and the Motorola Droid Bionic.

As explained in the article by Alan Ng, Google’s Nexus 4G was relatively unheard of until last week and the term iPhone killer may be overused but this smartphone may just warrant the title with its 4G LTE support, large 720p display and Android 4.0 power.

The Motorola Droid Bionic has also been tipped as a worthy possessor of the title iPhone killer and has also had it for months now. We recently carried out a poll asking readers whether they would consider waiting for the iPhone 5 rather than the purchasing the Droid when it gets released. The results revealed that most readers would be sticking to the Droid.

Those at Gather also found these results and agree that the iPhone 5 has no chance against the Droid Bionic. Of course we will have to wait until both the devices are released before we can find out what happens. What do you think will happen? Is there a device that you think has the potential to be an iPhone killer?
