If we have learned anything from the reaction of the Porsche 918 Spyder, it’s that many consumers are unhappy with the fact that a truly awesome supercar will gain some weight in order to make room for some batteries and an electric motor or two. However, this is a road that some of the big boys are taking now, such as Ferrari and McLaren, as they implement technology taken from F1 and adapted to road cars.
However, it seems strange that Jaguar would also wish to go down the same route, especially when the company has no way of competing with the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari and the McLaren P1. However, they do have their sights on the Porsche 911 Turbo S, and so will need to take a different approach in order to do so.
We are hearing rumors that there could be a Jaguar F-Type hybrid, which would more than likely be the Coupe version. However, there are one or two concerns with this, such as the powerplant and gaining even more weight.
Jaguar F-Type Coupe Hybrid engine and electric motor — If this rumor is true (which we highly doubt) then this new revised model will sport a small, yet powerful 1.6-liter turbo- and supercharged engine, which will work in conjunction with several electric motors, which could produce a rumored 700 horsepower.
However, like the 918 Spyder, this will come at a price, because those motors and batteries will give the vehicle some extra weight. This is a huge issue, considering the Jaguar F-Type is already a bit on the heavy side, although we have to look at the F-Type more of a GT rather than a light sports car.
The biggest issue we have hear is the fact that not once have we heard fans of the F-Type asking for a Hybrid version, as they have more pressing concerns with the vehicle. The first has already been discussed, and that’s the weight issue, and secondly, if you truly want to get a feel for the Jaguar F-Type, then there needs to be a manual transmission option. According to Auto Express, the Jaguar F-Type Hybrid will not go into production until 2016.
