Is the novelty of Google+ really wearing off?

Most of the headlines since Google launched its new social networking site have been on the positive side. The site has been a breath of fresh air for many users who are tired of the likes of Facebook. But recent studies have shown a small decline in traffic on the site, so is the novelty of Google+ really wearing off?

Redmond Pie is reporting that traffic for Google+ had dropped from 1.86 to 1.79 million hits in the last week. This is according to data from Experian Hitwise an internet traffic measuring company based in New York. Average usage time also saw a decline of ten percent, falling from 5 minutes 50 seconds to 5 minutes 15 seconds. Compared this to the previous week that saw traffic rise by 283 percent, but these latest figures are not exactly the end of the road for the site.

So far the growth of Google+ has been very impressive, and it has to be remembered it is still invite only. After a new product launch it can be expected for demand to weaken slightly after a few weeks. Google are still working on the “Project”, and plan to enhance and add features to it over the coming months.

Once the site is opened up to everyone you will see the site grow massively, and the one thing which is the biggest problem at present will be resolved. Many users have already stated that they would ditch Facebook in favor of Google+ if all their friends were on there. What will disappoint some users is the news that games will be coming to the site, but will attract many to it.

But if Google can incorporate games to the site without intruding the news feeds of those who don’t want to play will please all. The company is also listening to user’s feedback about the site, which was evident recently with the changes to the ‘real name policy’.

Google would have learned from its mistakes from previous forays into the social networking market. This will mean Facebook finally has a worthy competitor to go up against which will benefit users of both sites. They have even promised to support other groups like business and teenagers amongst others in the future. The summer and school holidays may also have something to do with the slight drop in traffic to the site.

Just a clarification to this article… Google did not change their ‘Real Names’ policy, they simply announced they would work on ‘explaining it better, and having clearer reasons given for suspension’.


Google just can’t do social no matter what kind of experienced they provide. Google + already has such a geek circle jerk stench, people will no doubt soon be dropping like flies.

What I’m not seeing mentioned in these posts about active user time dropping is familiarization and set up time being factored in. I have familiarized myself with G+ beta and set up my first circles. For me that was about an hour. Hitwise figures say an average fall of 35 seconds, which would account for familiarization and set up time. I don’t see how it can be interpreted as a loss of interest at such an early stage.
