iPhone 6: Iris scanning vs. fingerprint ID

Love them or hate them, there is no denying that when it comes to security, the iPhone and its iOS is pretty hard to beat when put up against Android handsets. We know that this will cause some negative comments, but it’s the truth.

However, when it comes to the security of getting into the phone itself, then the iPhone is a little behind in that area because Samsung has had a decent security system in place that only allows the person in with the right voice match.

Apple introduced its own system called Touch ID, which is a fingerprint scanner built into the home button. We know that there have been a few teething issues with the system as people come to terms with a new way to unlock their iPhones, and there is no assurance that Apple will keep with the technology on the iPhone 6.

Having said that, seeing as though Apple purchased AuthenTec back in 2012 because of its fingerprint tech, surely they will not drop it after just a year? Having said that, there is no reason why this cannot be incorporated into other Apple devices, such as their MacBook range.

With Apple always looking for ways to keep ahead of the competition, which they have not always been able to do, we do know they are already looking at the next advancement over fingerprint scanning, and one such system is an Iris scanner.

The possibility to use Iris scanning in an iPhone – although surely the iPhone 6 is out of the question — is a more reliable system than Touch ID because we have all suffered from not being able to unlock our handset with sweaty fingers. However, you can’t even use your iPhones normal functions when your fingers are overly sweaty.

It’s not just that some people just cannot make the fingerprint scanner work for them for one reason or another, but this would not be an issue for an Iris scanner because it’s a far more precise system.

From what we know Iris scanning is still a few years off, so any hope of seeing the system incorporated into the iPhone 6 is wishful thinking, that and the fact that a complete redesign would be needed as you cannot expect one camera to be able to scan your eye as well as take images and video calls.
