iPhone 5 release was dropped shortly before iPhone 4S?

In the months leading up to the launch of the iPhone 4S there were a number of various rumors surrounding the next handset to be released by Apple. Talk of a bigger screen within a new form factor and a device with a different home button were rumored, but many were slightly disappointed when we were finally shown the new model. Now there is talk that the iPhone 5 release was dropped shortly before the iPhone 4S made its debut.

Business Insider are reporting to have a source who is claiming to have access to an iPhone 5 prototype, and provided some details of the device. Of course none of the claims can be verified for certain so the usual pinch of salt has to be used.

It is claimed that Apple were originally planning on launching the iPhone 5 this year, but scrapped plans a few months before the iPhone 4S was eventually launched. The iPhone 5 prototype allegedly had a four inch touchscreen display with an aluminum back contained in flatter form factor.

The device was much faster than current models of the iPhone but at the expense of battery life that was reported to be poor. There was also a claimed ten megapixel rear mounted rear camera, and the home button wasn’t a physical button and holding it down would reboot the device.

It is also being claimed that the iPhone 5 prototype had Siri installed but was called Assistant, and Apple want to eventually use liquid metal technology to manufacturer a variety of iPhone colors. The reason why the prototype eventually didn’t see the light of day is that the late Steve Jobs was unhappy with the larger screen, because it fragmented iPhones.

Apple could have plenty of different prototypes in production but whether they were close to launching one this year is another matter. What do think about these latest iPhone 5 rumors?
